BRASA is pleased to announce the winners of the Roberto Reis BRASA Book Awards for 2008.
The Roberto Reis BRASA Book Award recognizes the two best books in Brazilian Studies published in English that contribute significantly to promoting an understanding of Brazil. This award honors Roberto Reis, one of the founders of BRASA, who was committed to developing Brazilian Studies in the United States. The authors of the two best books will each receive a certificate and a check for US$200. The awards will be presented at the closing ceremonies of the BRASA IX meeting at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday, March 29, 2008.
The winners are:
John Tofik Karam, Another Arabesque: Syrian-Lebanese Ethnicity in Neoliberal Brazil, Temple University Press, 2007.
and
Jeffrey D. Needell, The Party of Order: The Conservatives, the State and Slavery in the Brazilian Monarchy, 1831-71, Stanford University Press, 2006.
The book prize committee was chaired by Alida Metcalf (Trinity University), and also included Marianne Schmink (University of Florida), and Tom Trebat (Columbia University).
